Ancient theater in Ostia Antica. Ostia was Rome's port city during the empire's heyday, but was later abandoned when the port silted in and the course of the Tiber River changed. More than a thousand years later the ruins were excavated and found to be well preserved in many parts by the silt.   (18/42)
